What is the best age to begin piano lessons
Although, an exposure to music and rhythm is beneficial to children of any age, starting music lessons with a goal of mastering a musical instrument is recommended to begin around age of 7. This is the time when a child's nervous system is mature enough to handle longer attention focus and better regulate emotions and behavior. The motor skills become sufficiently developed to successfully learn fine, precise movements of hands and fingers , and the cognitive abilities are at the level that allows to begin to comprehend, process and retain complicated information. Starting piano lessons at a younger age is possible but will require 100% of parents involvement for student's progress.
Training
Teaching methods will be choosen individually for each student based on age, natural ability, existing skill, if any, and a learning style. An appropriate methos book will be recommended by the teacher at the first lesson. All students will receive training in a classical piano technique as a foundation. The repertoire, however, will include various styles and genres of music for a comprehensive musical development. Music theory education is embedded in piano lessons from day one. Music theory curriculum is aligned with Texas Music Teacher Association standards and requirements. All students are offered participation in annual music theory testing through FMTA and TMTA. Preparation for RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music, Canada) and ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, England) exams is also available upon request.
Home practice
Learning piano is a demanding but rewarding project that requires commitment and regular efforts in order to progerss and improve. Students are required to practice at home their assigned pieces at least 5 days a week. The goals of home practice will be updated, explained and specified at the each weekly lesson. Access to an acoustic or digital piano with 88 weighted keys is necessary. Younger students might need help of parents to manage their piano practice schedule.
Events and performance opportunitues.
All students will have an access to participation in several music events throughout the school year. Two annual studio recitals will be held in December and May. Three festivals and two competitions provided by Frisco Music Teacher Association will require preparation of one piece of music that will be performed by memory: Fall Festival of North American Composers - works of past or current composers of The United States and Canada; Winter Festival of arrangments - any music piece that was arranged for piano, has to be marked "arr. by"; Spring Festival of Classical Composers -original piano works of composers starting from Baroque era through 20th century; Trophy Competition- repertoire is determined by FMTA at the beginning if each school year. Students will prepare ona particular piece based on their participating grade/division; Performance Contest - is offered to advancing piano students. In order to participate, students are required to pass the current year music theory test. and prepare 10-15 munutes of repertoire. Appropriate pieces will be determined by the teacher. First place winners of a local Performance contest will progress to the state and national performance competitions.
